Program Description

From Galilee to Jerusalem - The Gospel of Mark and the Kingdom of God. This program is offered in Spanish.

January 6 -21, 2025 - (16 Days) - Facilitator: David Castillo, Ph.D.

The Gospel of Mark is an exceptional text. It is not the most popular of the gospels, since it is usually held by Matthew for being the first of the canon of the Second Testament and possessor of the blessedness, or John, valued for its theological complexity. However, this short 16-chapter document is unique. It is the shortest exposition on the ministry of Jesus, and recounts his wanderings in a colourful and natural way, with a realism that recalls life in first-century Galilean society.

In Mark, Jesus inaugurates his ministry with the proclamation of the kingdom of God. This gospel thus becomes the gospel of the announcement of the Kingdom, of that new reality announced long ago by the prophets, taken up again by Jesus and characterized by the healing and saving intervention of God in history.

We will study the Gospel of Mark in its literary, social and religious dimensions, following the journey of Jesus from the village of Nazareth and the city of Capernaum, at the beginning of his ministry, to his passion in Jerusalem. We will meet closely with the Book of the Bible, with the Land of Israel, and with the people of the book, seeking to illuminate our present walk based on the community study of the Marcan tradition.

Venue: The course will be based on the historic biblical house Ecce Homo, located on Via Dolorosa, in the heart of the Old City of Jerusalem. The classrooms and study rooms are designed and equipped with intelligent technology to be able to make presentations and give talks. Accommodation is provided, generally in single rooms with private bathrooms, in the Ecce Homo Pilgrim house. The house has been described as a haven of tranquillity and peace within the vibrant Old City.
